The Raid on Deerfield, MA 1704
▪️ Reverend Williams would eventually make it back to Massachusetts. His wife however would not, she was one of the many that died on the long march. After over a year of captivity The Reverend and a number of others were released and sent home. Many of the Deerfield taken stayed, having joined French Catholic or Native American society and families. This assimilation was particularly common among the very young and the children that had been captured. With little memory of what life was it was easier to come to grips with the new circumstances. In 1707 Reverend Williams published a book that told of his experience. The book became a smash hit throughout the colonial world. The Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion tells of the Williams family and the people of Deerfield from the raid to the return. Four of his children were among the “redeemed” but his daughter Eunice stayed. She had joined a Mohawk family taking the name A’ongote which means “she was taken and placed”. By 1713 A’ongote had married a Mohawk man and Queen Anne’s War was over. ▪️

The Raid on Deerfield, MA 1704
▪️ The 109 English captives were probably aware to some degree of the horror that lay ahead of them. de Rouville intended to force march the entire group 300 miles through the freezing Canadian winter. Men, women, and children struggled through snow drifts and storms to reach captivity. In some cases, whole families had been taken as was true of the Williams'. Reverend John Williams, his wife and 5 children were all captured and set out on the long walk together. Williams's wife was one of the 20 or so to die on the march. Having had no time to prepare for a trip through the frozen north, many died of exposure and privation. The other deaths came at the hands of the captors. Through vicious beatings and general brutality, only 89 prisoners made it to Montreal. Once in Montreal many of the captives were sold or adopted or in some cases held for ransom. The final leg of the ordeal began at the end of the long march as the story of the Redeemed and Irredeemable began.

The Raid on Deerfield, MA 1704
▪️
Once the gate opened the raiding party swarmed through the village. Moving house to house the attackers split or bashed in doors and shattered windows to gain entry. As the townsfolk woke they scrambled to defend themselves and their families. The fighting became singular desperate struggles between individuals and small groups. The villager John Sheldon was able to slip away and ran all the way to neighboring Hadley to warn of the attack. Back in Deerfield, the defenders were losing. Either by design or chance, Reverend John Williams home fell first. Moving house to house de Rouville's men killed many in their sleep or burned them alive in their homes. Those that did make it outside to fight were caught in the open, often outnumbered. The fighters, for the most part, got cut down or taken prisoner. Once a house emptied of defenders (or sometimes even before) the raiders looted and torched them. Some homes put up a ferocious defense. Benoni Stebbins house became a rallying point and held off many waves of attackers. As the morning grew old the raiding party began to withdraw North with its new possessions, both human and material. The remaining attackers were pushed out when the militia from Hadley arrived to give aid. Angry and spoiling for a fight the men of Hadley gave chase to de Rouville's force heading North. The Native Americans had perfected the ambush tactic and stopped the pursuing militia using a well-placed trap. Recognizing the futility of continued pursuit, the militia returned to Deerfield. As the town realized what had happened the horror of it all set in. Most of the town had been burnt or wrecked to some degree. Over 50 people were killed, including 9 women and a mind-numbing 25 children. More than 100 people had been taken captive. The morning of their capture was terrifying but it was only the beginning of their nightmare.
